Made-To-Measure (MTM), Custom or Bespoke, do you know the difference?

We would like to revisit some thoughts that have arisen in the market in which we strive to attain with these quintessential blog post for those like minded followers. With that being said we often notice that certain make-ups of suits have been used interchangeably when in fact they usually have distinct differences. Made-To-Measure, Custom and Bespoke, do you know the difference?

MADE-TO-MEASURE (MTM)

The term made-to-measure refers to a garment that already exist. Meaning there will not be a pattern drawn for the new garment, a previous block pattern will be used. After measurements of the client have been taken, the seamstress or tailor will use these measurements to alter or adjust the preexisting block pattern or garment to match the clients measurements as best as possible. There will be as few as 2 fittings for a MTM suit, contingent upon measurements and tailoring precision. More fittings may be necessary. This process will be the most cost effective considering it takes the least amount of labor.

CUSTOM

A custom suit or garment will not be from an existing garment. There will be multiple measurements taken for the construction of the garment. A clothier or wardrobe consultant if not the tailor will take the measurements. All measurements will be well thought out but not exactly based off the curves and angles of the individuals body make up. A lot of the construction of the garment will be done by hand but some may be done by machine. This option should in most cases be a better fit than a made-to-measure suit and you will have more options on the customization of your garment. I would expect at least 2 to 3 fittings for this option, dependent upon contingencies that may arise. This is a great option for suiting that is affordable and you get what you want without the expense of a good bespoke suit.

BESPOKE

When referring to extreme bespoke tailoring it takes a skilled individual to construct this type of product. There will be an initial fitting to get many measurements and for the tailor to get a precise look at the client to ensure a perfect fit. There will also be fittings throughout the construction process to make sure the piece fits perfectly based off of the individuals body and posture. This process will usually be done mostly by hand while only using machine assistance minimally. Out of the 3 options discussed this will be the most expensive option because of the craftsmanship and labor hours to produce the finished product. If this option is affordable and makes sense for your lifestyle I definitely recommend getting fitted for a bespoke suit, you shouldn't be disappointed.
